Canvassing is about people

Sometimes our community feels so large, but then moments like these remind me just how small and connected it really is.

When I reached out to Dr. Linda Beck, who retired in July, to share my decision to run for the Torrance School Board, she immediately said yes to joining my leadership team. Linda was the principal of Castle Heights Elementary, one of the 16 schools I supported. Under her leadership, Castle Heights earned the California Distinguished School recognition again in 2024, a year after I retired as a Community of Schools Administrator.

Last week, Linda and I went canvassing together, and we were immediately reminded of how connected our community is. One of her best friends, Maureen, happened to meet us on the very block we were walking. I soon realized Maureen was the same resident who emailed me about her experiences with TUSD and with whom I had spoken by phone. What a small world!

Over the weekend, my husband and I were invited to a neighbor’s birthday celebration. There, we met a couple who recognized my campaign flyer and were surprised to meet me in person. We talked, shared a few laughs, and said goodbye with, “Hope to see you around!”

These moments remind me that canvassing is about so much more than knocking on doors. It’s about people, connections, conversations, and community.
