Norman, a neighbor in his 90s

About two years ago, on their daily morning walks, Jennifer and her husband met Norman, a neighbor in his 90s who still keeps the books for the family business he started from a desk in his garage. When she stopped by to ask where he wanted his yard sign, he said, “Put it wherever you want.” To Jennifer, he is a reminder that the heart of a community is in its people.

In Jennifer’s words

My husband and I met Norman, a neighbor in his 90s, about two years ago during our daily morning walks. He quickly became one of those familiar faces we always looked forward to seeing.

Norman has a desk set up in his garage, where you can often find him taking care of the books for the family business he started decades ago and eventually passed down to his son. In a world that has gone digital, Norman still does things the old-fashioned way: writing checks by hand, putting them into envelopes, and taking them to the post office. His bulletin board is filled with photos of his children and grandchildren — a beautiful reflection of a life centered on family.

Whenever we walk up that hill, we make a point of stopping by Norman’s garage to say hello and catch up. He always encourages us to stay active and keep walking. His warmth, wisdom, and steady presence have become a special part of our neighborhood walks.

The other day, when I stopped by the garage, Norman was sitting at his usual desk, taking care of business with that familiar smile. When I asked him where he wanted the yard sign, he simply said, “Put it wherever you want.”

To us, Norman feels like a father — kind, humble, and grounded in the values that stand the test of time. He reminds us that the heart of a community isn’t just in its schools, streets, or buildings. It’s in the people who make it feel like home.

Thank you, Norman, for your kindness, your friendship, and your support! It means more than you know.
