The work begins with listening

As I reflect on our door-to-door tour last week, I am reminded of how important it is to listen, learn, and stay connected to the community we serve.

One resident shared that they had lived in the same neighborhood for 41 years. They raised their children there, and today, they have eight grandchildren, several of whom attended our neighboring schools. Their story is a reminder of the deep roots families have in our community and the responsibility we carry to build on TUSD’s strong foundation while continuing to raise the bar for every student.

When I asked about their daughters’ experiences at our neighboring schools, a couple initially shared that things had gone well, aside from a few “teacher hiccups.” But as we continued talking, they recalled how a math teacher had made their older daughter feel less than capable since she was not in an accelerated program. Their daughter is now a teacher herself, yet that experience left a lasting impression on the family years later. This is a powerful reminder that our words and actions matter. Every student deserves to feel valued, supported, and encouraged to reach their full potential.

Another resident, a teacher in a neighboring school district, shared an important message: we need to bridge the gap between the boardroom and the classroom. Educators face increasingly complex challenges, and it is essential that we listen to their experiences, understand their needs, and ensure our decisions support the realities of the classroom.

With just two weeks left, there are still more doors to knock on, more stories to hear, and more conversations to have. Every conversation is an opportunity to listen, learn, and strengthen our commitment to students, families, and educators.

The work begins with listening, and it continues with action.
